Am I a candidate for a partial knee replacement?

The knee has three “compartments.” These are the medial compartment, the lateral compartment, and the patellofemoral compartment. A total knee replacement resurfaces all three of these compartments, whereas a partial knee replacement is a surgery that addresses the damage from arthritis in only one of these compartments. Typically, the recovery from a partial knee replacement is a little easier. However, it is important to determine whether this is the right surgery for the patient. This decision is based on patient symptoms, X-ray/MRI findings, and physical exam findings. Patient preference and goals regarding the potential need for more surgery/conversion to a total knee replacement in the future are other important considerations.
